Born With A Song In Her Spirit

Debra Henderson was born with a song in her spirit. Raised in San Francisco in a home where the gospel was lived out loud, she comes from a rich Baptist heritage. Both her grandfather and father stood in pulpits as pastors, and the sound of worship filled her earliest memories. At just seven years old, her little hands found the keys of the piano, and she became the accompanist for the church choir, playing alongside her mother, First Lady Annette Williams, who graced the organ. From that bench, she learned what it meant to play not for performance, but for the presence of God.

That early consecration shaped everything that came after. A soulful vocalist and gifted pianist, Debra has poured her heart into a body of work that bears witness to God's faithfulness.

Sometimes referred to as a press kit, Her debut album, Just Right for God (1994), introduced a voice marked by conviction and tenderness. Higher Ground (2008) followed, a project rooted in the longing of every believer to draw closer to the Lord. Her singles "Give God the Highest Praise" (2014) and "He Sees, He Knows, He Cares" (2025) continue that testimony, each note a reminder that God is worthy and that He is near to the brokenhearted. Outside of her personal music projects, she was also a featured artist on Kenny Little’s “Listen Everybody” (2020).

Her gift has graced some of gospel music's most storied platforms. Debra has been featured as a soloist on national recordings with the Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA), the legacy founded by the father of modern gospel music, Rev. James Cleveland, and on the GMWA Northern California Chapter projects "Standing in the Need of a Blessing" (2000) and "Wait." Her musical roots reach back even further, to her early featured work with Bennie Henderson & Family (1982), where the anointing on her life was already evident.

The Lord has carried her voice far beyond her California beginnings. From sanctuaries across the United States to international stages in Stockholm, Sweden, and Germany, Debra has ministered to congregations hungry for an authentic encounter with God. Wherever she has been sent, the assignment has remained the same: to lift up the name of Jesus and remind God's people that He is still on the throne.

In 2026, Debra co-founded the Henderson Music Group & Life Coaching, a Kingdom-minded vision born out of decades of ministry through music. Through this work, she pours into the next generation of worshippers, mentors artists called to the gospel, and creates space for music that is unashamedly God-centered. Her heart's cry is for the restoration of authentic worship, worship that touches the very heart of God and shakes the gates of heaven. She also is one of the newest artists on Gospel’s Bethesda Records and is poised to bring her unique sound and style to the label.

Whether at the piano, behind the microphone, in the studio, or on her knees in prayer, her mission has never changed: to bear witness through song that Jesus lives, prayer still works, and God is forever worthy of our highest praise. Debra is married to her beloved Bennie Henderson, her partner in life, love, and ministry. Together they have been blessed with four daughters, nine grandchildren, and one cherished grand-dog.
